About Me
Hello, I’m Luis. Talking about yourself is always a bit awkward, especially online, where it seems like everyone has had their career perfectly planned out since birth. But the truth is, my path has been anything but linear—and if you’re reading this, you’ll probably find some similarities.
I’m a Salvadoran graphic designer born on May 11, 1999. I’ll skip the degrees and instead tell you where I come from and what moves me.
The Career Change I Needed to Grow Professionally
Design wasn’t my first choice, you know. In fact, for five years, I dedicated my life to another profession: between 2015 and 2020, I studied software engineering and worked in web development. During that time, I created small projects involving programming logic and databases.
But as I got deeper into the field, I realized something: programming required a kind of patience and a way of solving problems that didn’t quite connect with what I truly enjoyed. Gradually, I discovered that what caught my attention wasn’t backend architecture, but the interface—how a site felt to use, how good typography changed the reading experience, how colors guided the eye, and how people interacted with what was on the screen.
In 2020, I decided to switch to the world of graphic design, especially focused on digital environments and interfaces. I won’t lie—it was a reality check. Changing careers means starting over from scratch. It took time and discipline to develop the visual and technical skills I didn’t get from engineering. So much so that in 2025 I decided to formally resume my university studies in graphic design, because I realized that in this field, learning never ends and you always have to keep investing in your own judgment. You’re probably wondering: how does someone without a degree get a job? I was surprised too, but it’s possible in this profession. I’ll probably write about that experience later.
A Brief Look at My Tastes and Interests
I don’t believe that a designer should only know about Figma or color theory. What truly enriches your work is how you observe the world and shape ideas based on your environment and influences:
The bridge between design and technology: I’m still fascinated by software. Today, with AI tools, I feel the gap between programming and design has narrowed significantly. I like understanding what happens “behind the scenes,” experimenting with tools that speed up processes, and seeing how technology can be an ally to boost creative ideas instead of a threat.
Video games: When I need to clear my mind, I usually turn to Steam. My tastes range from shooters like Counter-Strike to strategy games like Civilization VI. I’m also very fond of platform games. In a way, they offer a master class in interaction design and user experience.
Music: often have music playing in the background while I work. I listen to a wide mix of 80s and 90s English music, alternative rock, soul, and reggae. There’s a touch of melancholy in those songs that helps me focus and connect with ideas when I’m facing a blank canvas. My favorite bands are Tears for Fears and Red Hot Chili Peppers, by far.
Podcasts: I usually listen to them while working. I like topics related to science, politics, technology, and business. I can’t quite explain it, but they help me focus when I’m designing or working on something important. I like to listen to Lex Fridman, Silicon Valley Girl, and PDB's podcast.
Movies and series: As for movies, I really enjoy science fiction, action, mystery, and suspense. Without thinking twice, I can say my favorite is Interstellar.
Giving back to the design community
Besides that, I started a blog to write about topics related to the design field for people in my hometown. If you are curious, you can check it out here (It's written in Spanish, but I trust Google Translate to do a good job).
